Hi this is Dr. Brandith Irwin. This is my video blog for SkinTour.com. I want to talk today a little bit today about Sculptra.

I think Sculptra may be likely to get its full cosmetic approval soon, and I think we’ll be hearing a lot more about it. And it’s a very wonderful and interesting filler.

So many of you have already heard about Juvederm or Restylane, which are cross-linked hylauronic acids. Sculptra is a little different. Sculptra really is more a volumizer than a line filler.

So you know, think Mick Jaggar’s face, you know, think how he’s gotten so hollow over the years, Sculptra is perfect for him to fill in those hollows.

It’s already been FDA approved in this country for use in HIV patients, for that medication-associated complication of lypodystrophy, so I won’t go into that today, but I’ll just talk about the more cosmetic applications, although it’s been really wonderful for my HIV patients.

So one of the things to think about when you think about Sculptra is that it is a L-polylactic acid. And what that is is lactic acid stuck together in chains. And so its more permanent than either Restylane or Juvederm. It lasts longer, and again, it has a slightly different function. It’s really not a line filler, it’s a volumizer.

So where its good is its really useful for filling out cheeks that have gotten hollow…you know, particularly in the mid-face, supporting the mid-face, um, actually pulling the face a little bit this way kind of giving your face a little bit of a lift-like effect by adding volume back on the sides. And kind of see how that works, and for filling in around the chin area for example. It can also be used to fill in temples that are too hollow. It has a lot of different uses.

And it’s very safe when used correctly. It’s been used in Europe for years. It’s much more difficult to inject technically, and so it’s really important that you find a provider that’s experienced, a doctor that’s experienced in injecting Sculptra, because there is definitely a learning curve and again its much more technically challenging than either Juvederm or Restylane to do it.

So again look for someone with experience, and if you’d like more information about Sculptra, there’s also more information in my book which is the Surgery Free Make-Over: All You Need to Know for Great Skin and a Younger Face. You can find that on Amazon.
