Hi, I’m Dr. Brandith Irwin, and this is my video blog on skin for Skin Tour.com and today I’d like to talk a little bit about Evolence.
So there are lots of fillers now right, and I think many people are confused about what they all do and which one to use and why one is better than another.
One of the newer ones is called Evolence, which is new collagen filler, and I guess in my mind I’m wondering, "Why do we need this?" I mean the Evolence reps will probably call me and scream, but you know what, I’m still not convinced it’s worth using.
We have a great safety profile already in Juvederm and Restylane, which are cross-linked hyaluronic acid fillers. Evolence is a collagen filler, so, and unfortunately it’s an animal collagen filler. Any time you have another species used, there’s a potential for an adverse allergic reaction to it. And that potential for allergic reactions is higher in products that are made from animals than from human collagen or in the case of hylaronic acid, made in the lab.
Cosmoplast, which is a collagen filler, I use and I like because it’s made from human collagen, but that human collagen is from cells in a lab that have been continued for many, many years. So there’s no renewing source, so you don’t have problems with different DNA showing up in your injectible.
I don’t like DNA sources or collagen sources that are from cadavers, or from live sources where it’s changing all the time, like from human foreskins for example.
So, the reason I think Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are safer is because they’re from a cell line, a fibroblast cell line, that’s plated out in a lab, and that same cell line has been used for many years.
Evolence is a different product because again it’s from…it’s an animal product, so I’m trying to figure out what really is the advantage here? To me it seems like it’s going backward. Maybe you get a beautiful result, but we also get beautiful results with Juvederm, Restylane, Cosmoplast…some of the other things we have that have great safety profiles and we know are safer and don’t use an animal source.
So I guess I’m not convinced and that one I think, in my advice, I’d just wait on it, or not use it at all.
