One type of skin care product that does have good science behind it is the retinoids/retinols.  These vitamin A cousins help with cell turnover and help to repair sun damage in cells.  Everyone who can tolerate them should consider using a retinol product.

You can get a prescription retinoid from your doctor.  Or you can try an over the counter retinol.  I have used and have recommended this retinol by Skin Medica for years.   It is not cluttered up with a bunch of other products, and is a good solid retinol for a decent price.

If you get irritated from a retinol, wash with a gentle cleanser, apply your moisturizer, and then wait 10-20 minutes before applying your retinol.  And apply the retinol only at night.  Use a sunscreen and follow the product directions!

Retinol/Vitamin A Cousin – Use at night. If you can use the prescription version, do so - but many people don’t want to be bothered with a prescription and the two listed here are almost as good. This retinol also has vitamin E in a base that will not clog pores and is still compatible with moisturizers and sunscreens. Retinols are another type of repair cream that have science behind them. They build collagen and normalize sun damaged keratinocytes (skin cells). And if this product irritates your skin a little, try applying your moisturizer first, then wait 10-20 minutes, then apply this. You must use a sunscreen every morning if you use a retinoid.
