A question about the home skin renewing device - Palovia.

Aug 23, 2011
Hello, I read your blog post regarding at-home laser devices, which you said usually do not work. However, I have been hearing about the Palovia Skin Renewing Laser on Paula Begoun's radio show and on QVC. Here is what the brochure says about the device: Wavelength 1410 (+/- 20) nm Beam Divergence 0.15 (+/- .03) mrad Pulse Duration 10ms Maximum Output Energy 15mJ Would you mind giving your thoughts on this? It's expensive but so tempting to buy.

Dear reader -  my apologies for taking awhile on this one.   And, dear readers, we are going to see more and more of these home ("laser-like") devices over the next few years.   In my opinion, most of these (maybe even all) so far are not worth the money you will spend on them.

Here's why.  First these devices are so underpowered as to virtually be useless.  Proponents argue that delivering a small amount of energy daily over time may have beneficial effects.  Every study I've seen is sponsored by the company and results tabulated in ways that are often invisible to the human eye.  The real question is - do these devices make a difference visible to the human eye over time.   Possibly - but it's a lot of money to spend for possibly.

Here's the other problem.  We are all flawed human beings and it is difficult for most of us - especially busy women - to do something extra every day when we don't see much difference.  Many people buy these devices and after a week or two they sit in the drawer.

As for the Palovia, the wavelength is very safe but the wavelength only matters for the target (collagen, or pigment, or blood vessels, etc.).   At 15 mJ with a pulse duration of 10ms, there is very little energy there to penetrate into the skin in a way that will make a visible difference.   Hope this helps,  Dr. I
