Are peels part of a good antiaging strategy?Oct 17, 2011 Hi Dr. Irwin,
What is your opinion about peels? I am 41 years old and I have good skin. I was thinking of getting a series of peels for antiaging benefits. I have never done Botox or any fillers or anything like that. Is doing a series of peels a good idea? Would you recommend glycolic peels or a vitalize peel? I have some fine lines, but no major wrinkles.
Thanks so much!
I'm a fan of peels, as are many dermatologists, when done by trained medical personnel and matched to goals and skin type. In general, you will get better results from nurses or aestheticians who work with dermatologists because they have better training usually. But not always, some aestheticians who are very experienced are excellent. Just pick your provider carefully. Also, your goals sound realistic - ie targeting fine lines and mild sun damage. Consider not doing peels, if you are outdoors frequently. I have a slight preference for the beta hydroxy based peels like the Vitalize because they are self neutralizing. I've seen rare instances where glycolic peels (other offices) were left on too long or not neutralized properly and a peel "burn" occured. Dr. I |
