Too much Voluma in the upper cheek area causing problems!

Hi Dr Irwin, I had Voluma injected into my cheeks just below the orbital bone 7 months ago. I had a ml in each cheek. Since the injections I get a roll ("banana roll" or sausage) under one of my eyes when I smile. In your opinion, do you think this will go away as the filler dissolves? Or will I have it forever? In the last 7 months there has been no improvement. I have been to a few cosmetic Drs in my area but they are all conflicting in the information they give me. Any information you could give me would be great. I'm so upset and depressed because I had the procedure done to make my eyes look better :(

Yikes –  that sounds very unpleasant!  I’m assuming that the “sausage” problem is clearly visible when you smile and that the doctors can see it also.   Here are some things that may help and to think about:

  • Did you show the problem to the dermatologist who placed the Voluma?  I do know that sometimes when confidence is lost, you may not want to go back;
  • Since Voluma may last up to two years, at 7 months it may only be about 30ish% gone.  I’m wondering why none of the doctors you saw suggested reducing the volume there with an enzyme – hyaluronidase???   Most experienced board certified derms know how to use this effectively and not over use it;
  • You definately won’t have this forever but……..another 17 months or so is a long time to wait ……please seek out treatment for this.   Resources to consider.
