Are facial exercises helpful for sagging skin?

Hi Dr Irwin, Do you feel that face exercises are beneficial to help with sagging skin? Thank you, Nina

There is no great research on this.  In my opinion, they don’t help  because it isn’t the muscles that are sagging!   Sometimes, they even make things worse because some wrinkles are caused by excessive muscle activity – think frown lines and forehead lines, for example.

Sagging skin is caused by many factors but the main ones are loss of collagen and elastic fibers in the skin due to too much sun (mostly) and aging (a little), loss of volume from shrinking fat pads and bone which support the facial architecture, and sometimes from weight changes, expecially if over 40.  Dr. I

One of the best investments in your skin is your daily skincare. Why? Because you can prevent many problems with blotchy skin color, lack of glow, texture, some types of acne, and fine lines with good skincare products. You can also correct some of these problems with effective skincare products. Great skincare is often more expensive because quality ingredients are expensive. Some companies spend on research/development which benefits all of us and adds to the cost. Are they worth it? In general - yes!
