Ruddy skin, red skin, rosacea, veiny skin and skin that flushes easily – a way to improve?

What can I do about ruddy skin? I am Irish and have freckles and think those are adorable if it weren't for the underlying ruddy color of my complexion. Also, unfortunately, I am getting crepey skin on my hands and neck at 49. I am blessed with good health, good friends, and (according to many) great bone structure but when I look in the mirror all I see is Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ted Kennedy (bless both their souls). Your articles are brilliant and helpful but I've had trouble finding ones that address us ruddy folk that were not blessed with good skin. Thank you. I really appreciate and value your articles. Best, Sabrina

I love freckles too, so what I’m about to say may cheer you up: If you find a good laser center near you that has an IPL/photorejuvenation system (remember spas often have IPLs that are too weak), you can reduce the flushing and redness to  a minimal in 3 to 6 treatments. Maintenance after that is usually once a year.

IPLs as a treatment for flushing and ruddiness

IPLs (Intense Pulsed Light) are generally better for flushing, ruddiness and sun damage. Vbeam lasers are generally better for really large veins on the face or discreet red spots.

Your freckles will lighten during the treatment, but they will not disappear and will get darker again with time and sunlight. This happens even through a good sunscreen, because no sunscreen blocks all the UV light in natural light.

Also, consider that you might have rosacea (more about this here). Get your primary care doc or your dermatologist to discuss this with. Prescription creams for rosacea won’t take the ruddiness that’s there away, but they will help to prevent recurrence and progression of the disease rosacea, if you have it. Rosacea, in addition to causing flushing, enlarged blood vessels, and ruddiness, also causes pores to enlarge and texture to get coarser so you want to get help on this.

For crepey skin, see this post I just posted that reviews in depth causes, preventative measures, and options for fixing.

Being blessed with good health and friends and bones is so great. Good luck Sabrina, and I hope this helps.

SkinTour Skincare
One of the best investments in your skin is your daily skincare. Why? Because you can prevent many problems with blotchy skin color, lack of glow, texture, some types of acne, and fine lines with good skincare products. You can also correct some of these problems with effective skincare products. Great skincare is often more expensive because quality ingredients are expensive. Some companies spend on research/development which benefits all of us and adds to the cost. Are they worth it? In general - yes! I have handpicked some of what I consider to be the best skin care products, and offer them for sale on SkinTour's shop. This is based on my team and I's testing and research at our clinic. Many of the products are in my own regimen. What could be better than using skin care products a dermatologist uses?!
