I have about a dozen tiny red dots on my chest and back. Most look like a broken capillary, but some are a little bigger. I'm guessing it is largely from sun damage because although I've never been a sunbather/tanning bed person, I lived in a desert and am very fair skinned. Is there a way to get rid of these dots? I am a 43 yr old female.

You'll want to be sure you see a dermatologist for an accurate diagnosis before removal but often these are small blood vessel growths often referred to as cherry hemangiomas.  They are... more

Hi Dr Irwin, I am so glad I found your site and even more excited that your office is close by! My question is regarding sebaceous hyperplasia - how can I get rid of them? I am 56 and they seems to be multiplying. My brother who is 11 years older than I am has them all over his face. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks, Karin
You're right that these are usually genetic in that these pesky bumps track with oily skin, large pores and acne (at least in the teens).  The first thing you want to do is make a... more

Dear Doctor, I believe I have the condition that you refer to as "cobble chin", but when I look at pictures that show people who have this condition they sometimes say it looks like dimpling. My condition under my chin actually looks like small bumps under my skin. They do not hurt and they give me no problems. If I pull in my lips (tightening the skin on my chin) they actually disappear. What is the best way to treat this condition? Sincerely, Donna

A common complaint is a bumpy texture on the chin area.  Here are the 3 most common causes.

1) The first is old acne scarring.  Some people have their most severe acne on their chins... more

What Causes Milia?

A milia is just a pore that gets clogged with sebum/dead skin cells and then the sebum hardens under the skin.  These show up as tiny white bumps under the skin that persist.  They are... more

I have these small flat growth under both of my eyes. I've been told that they are nothing but clogged pores. I got them after my second pregnancy. What kind of treatment would be best?
To know how to treat something like this, first you really need a diagnosis.  There are about 10 things that can cause growths under the eyes.  You doctor may know that they are benign... more

Dr. Irwin, I am 48 years old and really battling keratosis. Some are raised and some are flat. Is there a lotion that can help me get rid of these and fade them?

Okay - I'm making some assumptions.   I'm assuming these are the benign form (seborrheic keratoses (seb kers)) not the precancerous ones (actinic keratoses).  Sometimes people get these... more

Please help me! I am a 50 year old Asian female. I have a benign, slightly raised, seborrheic keratoses on my cheek, the result of staying out in the sun too long and getting sunburned. I have seen a couple of dermatologist already but I don't know what to do. The first dermatologist wants to shave it off. Another wants to spray liquid nitrogen on it. One says I can try laser and the other says I can't do laser because the spot is raised and I am Asian. Since the raised brown spot is on my cheek, I don't want a scar. What should I do? Since I'm Asian, can I do laser? Would laser remove and flatten the brown spot? Or should I just let the doctor spray the liquid nitrogen on my face? Also will liquid nitrogen flatten the raised spot? Please help me!!! I am so tormented every time I see my face. Thank you!

I'm guessing you are getting more than a little frustrated with all these different answers!  Here's my "2 cents" and I've have removed thousands of these on my asian patients over the... more

Situation: My forehead has had some 'odd' looking bumps for years now. I regularly go to the derm for 'vanity' purposes; Botox, fillers. The problem is I can't ask about skin problems without paying for his opinion & diagnosis when I'm getting my cosmetic work. My insurance doesn't cover this particular derm that I've gone to for years & years. I went to the website: skinsight.com. This site, you may be familiar with, has pictures of various skin disorders. My forehead resembles Molluscum Contagiosum. The sight says it generally goes away on it's own or can hang around for a long time - that's my situation. Question: Do you have a recommendation on getting rid of this with a topical oinment or what? I don't want ot have a in-office procedure, again because my derm doesn't subscribe to my insurance carrier. Thank you in advance.
I really think you should go to a dermatologist who is covered on your plan if you don't want to pay out of pocket for medical care. An accurate diagnosis is key and you will save yourself... more

Hi, I heard you last night on Paula Begoun's web talk and was impressed with what I heard so I have been browsing your site. My question has to do with your comment on post-menopause acne. I am 54, have had a full hysterectomy at age 50, take monthly shots of Estrodial and according to my ob/gyn should stay on this the rest of my life. I also have used Retin-A-Micro since age 40. I agree that the acne that I get now is much different than as a teenager. It is deeper and more cystic as you stated. But, I didn't see anything that you recommended to help with this. Besides the Retin-A-Micro, I occasionally use a glycolic acid. Is there something else or better to do to get rid of the under the skin white "spots" that turn up. Some become bumps, some stay under the skin. Thank you for any guidance.

I'm wondering if your acne is all month long or concentrated around when you get your monthly estradiol injection.  It might be worth seeing your gynecologist and trying a different... more

About 15 years ago (I am 56)I had some Electrolysis to remove hair from my upper lip area. During one of my treatments the operator missed the hair follicle and created a small hole in my skin. Over time the "hole" has gotten bigger. Is there anything that can be done to fix or at least minimize this "hole"? It's really bothering me now. Thanks for any help you can offer, LuAnne
If you have a good dermatologist, the best way is to have her/him use a tool called a "punch."  These come in different sizes starting at about 1.5 millimeters.  The spot is numbed first... more

A cyst is now swollen and red!

I am a 39 year woman who has I think a sebaceous cyst on my chin. It has been there for 25 years. After doing a month long cleanse, the cyst or a mole without pigmentation (as my dermotologist said)became red surrounding the white looking cyst and swelled up to the size of a pea. I have been using castor oil and heat to reduce the swelling over 3 days. It is still very raised and hard. What should I do ?
You should definately see your dermatologist or, if you don't have one, your primary care doc. The cyst could very well be infected now.  Dr.... more

What is this growth?

I popped a small zit right in the middle of my forehead approximately one month ago, and it has turned into some kind of growth (almost like a skin colored mole?). I doesn't seem to have any type of fluid inside. People are beginning to notice it and it is making me very self conscious. I can't figure out how to get rid of it, I've tried popping it, putting apple cider vinegar on it, as well as just washing it with anti bacterial soap and using tea tree oil. None of these so called "remedies" seem to be working, now I'm worried that I will create some kind of scar :( What should I do? What can be done? Should I get it surgically removed? But if so, would I have scarring?
Whoaaaa!  Stop right there -  you need to get into your doctor right away.  There is a whole list of things this growth could be since it's been there a month.  It could be a raised scar... more
