Hello doctor, Iam 25 years old male Suffering with oily skin and acne from 4 years. My parents never had oily skin. Do I suffer with oily skin life long? Is there any product to reduce my oily skin? Please tell me

This is a little tough because you don't tell me how bad your acne/oil is?  There are basically 4 types of acne

  • Grade 1-  just blackheads and whiteheads (closed & open comedones -

-------------------------------------------------------------- I have very oily skin and even enlarged oil glands all over my chest that are embarrassing. I am 22 yrs old and considering the cosmetic surgery to melt them down. Do u thing it would be beneficial to go through with this procedure? I have tried everything and it doesnt seem to work so im desperate.
I really think you should see a good dermatologist as soon as possible.  Often when the pores are enlarging on the chest like you are describing, it's really a type of acne.  There are... more

Hello Dr. - Even at the age of 59 I still have super oily skin--particularly the nose area. also, I was born with bags under my eyes what non-surgical fix would you recommend, please. Have daughter's wedding 9/4/11. Thank you greatly, VJ

Hi VJ -  Have you talked to your dermatologist about trying spironolactone (decreases testosterone slightly in women but still keeps it in the normal range)?  It will decrease your oil... more

Hi Dr. Irwin. My question is about Sunscreens. They all feel like moisturizers but most skin care programs suggest using a moisturizer before a sunscreen. I am 50 and have oily skin but with the use of the skin Medica retinol I do tend to be surface-dry right after washing. Do I need to use a moisturizer or is a sunscreen like Ti Silc spf 60 or SkinMedica SPF 30 enough?
You really don't need an extra moisturizer with the sunscreen if you're oily.  Here are 3 options.  One, just use the sunscreen alone.  Two, use the moisturizer you like and put a... more

Does Differin gel have the same benefits as Renova, Retin-A, Tazorac, and Retinol? I seem to tolerate it better than the Retin-A micro gel I used in the past, but would like to know if it is helping build collagen. I am 47 and do not have active acne, just oily skin. Lisa in Naples, FL
Pretty much!  They are very close since they all are in the same class of medications called retinoids which are vitamin A cousins.  The Differin is a good choice for you if you have oily... more

Dear Dr. Irwin, I'm a nineteen year old girl who has had acne in the past and my skin is still pretty oily. Since my pores have been enlarged by the acne, I'm wondering if a laser procedure like IPL or Fraxel would work on me. Or should I wait until I'm older and possibly less oily? Thanks so much for your time. Your website is great! Gaby

Hi Gaby -  thanks for the compliment!

Pore size, as I'm sure you know, is one of the toughest things to change. This is because pore size is largely inherited and related to the amount of... more

I'm fifty-two and still really oily with clogged pores and acne. What can I do?

It doesn't seem fair, does it? My patients always say they can't believe they have wrinkles and acne!

I can't give you a specific plan without seeing you, but for someone your age with oily... more
