I recently ordered Retin A and was given desonite cream. Are they similar drugs? I use it for wrinkles.

You bring up a good point and no, they are not the same, at least in the U.S.  Did you order this off the web?  In most countries, if you buy a product like Retin A (generic name is... more

My skin gets quite dry during the winter. Lately when I get out of shower, my face is not only very dry but red too (at night). I basically follow your skin care regimen. I was wondering what else I could do to add moisture. I do moisturize before using Renova, but will that cause the Renova to be less effective? And how often is ok to exfoliate when you have dry skin? Would using a gentle peel instead of a scrub be better? Please help! Thank you!

One thing to consider is that one or more of your products is irritating you.  I really think you should see a dermatologist for help and take all the products you've been using.  In the... more

Dear Dr. Irwin, I hope you can help with the following. Is Topix replenic CF cream (and serum) compatible with Aveeno ageless vitality night cream, Nia24 skin strengthening complex, skinceuticals CE ferulic and prevage MD? (As in no components are deactivated) I hope you can shed some light on the often compex world of skincare. Thank you in advance,

The bottom line on this one is  there are so many different ingredients in all these products that no one on this earth knows whether these are all truly compatible.  A good rule of thumb... more

My daily regimen for past years is Obagi foaming gel cleanser, Paula's Choice skin refreshing toner and MD Forte SPF 30 sunscreen. At night I use Benzoyl Peroxide 4% and neutrogena moisturizer. I am 57 years old and a dark olive skin tone.
The answer to this is no, no and no!!!  If any product burns and stings, you should stop it and report it to the doctor who sold it to you.  You are probably allergic to one of the... more

Hi Dr. Irwin I have heard that products that are packaged in jars are not stable and that as soon as you open the jar the light diminishes the effect of the ingredients. Is this true?
This is true mostly for antioxidants which, on exposure to air (just like fruit), start to deteriorate slowly.   The best packaging for these is air-free.  But, if you open a dark glass... more

Dr. Irwin, I'm 62 and I've been using SkinCeuticals Emoillence moisturizer as recommended by your office; however I see that it includes parabens. I've read that parabens are unhealthy. Do you recommend avoiding products that contain them?

Parabens are used as a preservative in skin care products.  Almost all skin care products contain preservatives because otherwise they would grow bacteria, yeasts and moulds - something... more
