Blog with Dr. IrwinCombining treatments - what works best?Posted in Thermage, Sculptra, JuvedermRestylane, Fraxel laser on Apr 29, 2010 | Permalink You discuss how long to wait after an injection to have Thermage or Fraxel, but is there any problem with having Thermage or Fraxel first and then an injection like Sculptra or Juvederm later? How long do you have to wait?
This is a hot topic right now because there is a synergistic aspect to combining various treatments well. The problem is that there are virtually no studies at all on combining treatments... more
I had botox done on my forward and for crows feet around my eyes. However, one side of my face looks paralyzed and my mouth goes to one side when I talk. Does this suggest that more was injected into one side than the other?
thanks

THIS IS NOT A GOOD RESULT! I know I don't need to tell you this. If your mouth isn't moving normally, it's almost always because your provider injected in an area around the lower edge of... more
When Juvederm doesn't seem to be working.Posted in Sculptra, Radiesse, JuvedermRestylane, Fillers on Apr 29, 2010 | Permalink Your site is a wealth of information, Doctor Irwin. I am 48, and have the typical sagging because the collagen in my cheeks bones is being lost. Therefore, I have double parenthesis down between my nose and mouth on the sides. I have had Juvederm, and the first time loved it, but the next time with the same doctor, had weird results. It is as if the filler just shifted where the sags were. So, I sought out a new doctor, and still was not happy with Juvederm. Now, it is time to do something about these sags I mention, and even another doctor recommends Juvederm. A consult with another spa mentioned anti-aging bio-therapeutic treatments. I am so overwhelmed, but want to fix my face. Your website is great. Do you have a suggestion. That is a lot to ask, as there is so much out there. Thank you.
Thank you!! It really helps to know your age but I wish I knew your facial structure as well. So let's talk a little about the causes of those deep lines from the nose to the mouth. In... more Is it okay to have Thermage every 6 or 7 months after the age of 55? I need it that often and just wanted to know if it is safe.
Some of my collegues in Los Angeles tell me there are celebs doing it every 3 months (I am not recommending this). We really don't have any studies to answer the question either. Since... more My new skin care regimen is irritating me. What should I do?Posted in Skin Care Products, Acne on Apr 24, 2010 | Permalink Dr. Irwin,
My dermatologist just prescribed acanya gel, benzoyl peroxide wash 8% for morning use and I apply aveeno sunscreen moisturizer SPF 30 after cleansing, then for night she recommended a gentle cleanser (I use Shu uemura) and then apply differin lotion, then a moisturizer (I use Olay regenerist). I have been on this regimen for a few days and my skin has become red, flaky and putting a moisturizer hurts. Is there any oil free moisturizer you can recommend for me for both day and night that won't sting when I put it on? I have combination skin (oily T zone) and my cheeks are incredibly sensitive right now, it hurts when I put anything on it. I also live in a place where the summers can get very humid.
thanks so much!
You sound very uncomfortable!! Please call your dermatologist and let them know what happened. They should suggest a break and then a different regimen. But if you can't get through on the... more How can I get rid of crepey eyelid skin?Posted in Lasers, Eyelid Treatments on Apr 24, 2010 | Permalink Hello Dr. Irwin, I just listened to you on Paula\'s talk show and am excited to ask you about a facial aging skin issue I have. I am 51 yrs. old and have battled facial edema under the eye area right on the cheek bones for years. A couple years ago, I started taking armour thyroid for autoimmune disease and the edema has improved greatly. But as a result, I have crepey skin only in this area. The rest of my skin is in pretty good shape. Is there anything that can help this? What would your recommendations be? I never see this issue addressed and would appreciate your expertise.
Thank you. Roberta
Hello Roberta - I'm not sure how old you are (the elasticity issue) and you'll want an opinion from a good cosmetic dermatologist. But, if you your lower eyelid skin is really just... more
What can I do about post menopausal acne?Posted in Menopause, Lumps bumps moles, Growths, Acne on Apr 24, 2010 | Permalink Hi,
I heard you last night on Paula Begoun's web talk and was impressed with what I heard so I have been browsing your site. My question has to do with your comment on post-menopause acne. I am 54, have had a full hysterectomy at age 50, take monthly shots of Estrodial and according to my ob/gyn should stay on this the rest of my life. I also have used Retin-A-Micro since age 40. I agree that the acne that I get now is much different than as a teenager. It is deeper and more cystic as you stated. But, I didn't see anything that you recommended to help with this. Besides the Retin-A-Micro, I occasionally use a glycolic acid. Is there something else or better to do to get rid of the under the skin white "spots" that turn up. Some become bumps, some stay under the skin.
Thank you for any guidance.
I'm wondering if your acne is all month long or concentrated around when you get your monthly estradiol injection. It might be worth seeing your gynecologist and trying a different... more How long does the TNS Essential Serum last?Posted in Untagged on Apr 18, 2010 | Permalink I see that you really like SkinMedica\'s TNS Essential Serum. How do I construct a great skin care regimen?Posted in Vitamin C, Sun Protection, Sun Damage, Skin Care Products, RenovaRetinoids, Pigment problems, Maintenance, Cosmeceuticals, Cell growth factors, Brown Spots, Blotchiness on Apr 18, 2010 | Permalink Hi Dr. I!I have a question regarding skin care products. I am such a fan that I have aquired the products you use and recommend to see what works for me. I guess at this point I have become a little neurotic/obsessed with my skin as I see the changes that I know are inevitable. So, how much is too much??? This is what I am doing right now. Night time: Obagi Nu-derm (hydroquionone 4%) for the brown spots, TNS Recovery Complex, Eye cream, Revaleskin Night Cream, and a moisturizing lotion (dry skin).Day Time is much harder for me to figure out. Obagi Nu-derm (hydroquionone 4%) for the brown spots, TNS Recovery Complex, Eye cream,SkinMedica Vitamin C & E, Moisturizer (Dry skin), Zincclear Sunscreen and I am trying to figure out if I can add a firming/wrinkle filler for the slight wrinkles that are NEW ON my cheeks and then Makeup (foundation, blush, lipstick)!!!!I\'m almost 40 and my skin has become dry, a few brown spots and NEW (very noticeable to me) wrinkles under the eyes and cheeks. Do the products work as well piled on??? I was told I should use a \"treatment\" type product such as \"Perricone Md\" face firming activator and/or \"Substiane\" (La Roche-Posay). There is just so much. I know a lot of it is trial and error and I know everyone is different. I apoligize for this \"book\" I have written in trying to ask you for your advise and what is too much product and if am I going over board if I throw in an extra wrinkle filler or two in my daily regimen??? Thank you for your time and for this website.
Whoa!! This is way too much so let's simplify and get back to basics a bit. Here's what I'd recommend: AM cleanse, Vit C & E (your antioxidant), eye cream, spot treat your brown spots... more Hi, Dr. Irwin:
I had Sculptra injections and am scheduled to return Monday for my next treatment, but I am VERY nervous about having it done again. I had the most outrageous bruising -- from mid-chin below the mouth all the way up my jawline to the ear. Sonja
There are two parts to bruising with Sculptra. What the patient (you) does and what the doctor does. You hopefully were told to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen/Advil, naproxyn/Aleve, etc and all... more |
