So what causes this extremely common problem? Many people call this "dry" scalp, and so do hair stylists. It is also called dandruff, or it's medical name is seborrheic dermatitis ("seb derm" for shorthand).

Believe it or not, the scalp is not actually "dry." The scaling and itching are caused by an over-growth of yeasts (not candida) that live in the oil glands of the scalp. Other common areas for this are the eyebrows, between the eyebrows, and at the base of the nose. Other, more rare conditions, including psoriasis, can also cause flakiness, but seb derm is the most common cause.
