Manicures - Okay to Cut Cuticles?

Sep 10, 2009
Infections and inflammation of the area just behind the cuticles are common. Here's how to avoid them:
  • Before pushing the cuticle back, soak it briefly first in warm water to soften it.  Then be GENTLE.
  • Never cut the cuticles at the base of the nail very much. It's okay to trim (gently again) a particularly dry or thick part, but never let anyone trim them too much. If the cuticle is damaged, water gets behind it. Then bacteria and yeasts start to grow.
  • See your doctor if the cuticle area is red, sore, swollen, or drains pus.
