Preventing ER Visits on Vacation

May 14, 2010
When planning for a summer vacation, here is something really important to take with you to prevent skin problems that can land you in the ER.

Have your doctor prescribe for you a small tube of mupirocin (generic name) ointment. This is a prescription strength antibiotic ointment that helps to prevent cuts, insect bites, and scrapes from getting infected with Staph (the most common culprit). Over the counter creams like Neosporin aren't as effective and about 10% of our population is allergic to Neosporin.
