Problems with Dermapen – pustules and bumps
Okay so this is exactly what I’m concerned about with these devices. When you puncture the skin, you are causing damage to the barrier layer. Dermapens and other needling devices can cause infections, if not used correctly or if you are already a staph carrier. About 20% of the population cares staph chronically – usually in inside of the nose.
Having said that, I really think you need to see your doctor and get a culture done. It’s important not to just treat with antibiotics before the culture, because you don’t know for sure what’s growing in your skin without a culture.
In our clinic, we culture rashes, pustules, and other skin lesions frequently and often get other bacteria besides staph. And, it’s helpful to know if it’s MRSA or not – which is the more dangerous, aggressive form of staph. You won’t know that without a culture. Antibiotics can be started as soon as the culture is done, if needed.
Hope this helps, Dr. I
