Pigment problems post eczema.
Thank you for writing! You’re not alone on this as eczema often leaves pigment alterations for 3-12 months after the eczema is gone, due to the underlying inflammation from the eczema.
Still………. it’s not making sense to me that the pigment is persisting 6 years after your last flare. In general, if something is not following the usual pattern, it’s worth asking if something else could be contributing to the discoloration.
Also, persistent pigment in skin can be at a number of different “levels” in the skin. Some pigment is more right on the surface (epidermis), some may be in the high dermis (just under the epidermis) and sometimes, if the inflammation/eczema has gone on for a long time, the pigment drops down into the deeper dermis – sort of like a tattoo!
Please see a board certified dermatologist. She/he may be able to help you and sometimes a biopsy is recommended to see where the pigment is, or what might be causing it to persist.
Hope this helps, Dr. I
