What to do when you pick something and you think it might scar.

Hello Dr. Irwin. I accidentally picked hard at a small scarred area that I recently did the fraxel laser on my cheek (I would say I picked it 2 weeks later) and it's scarred even worse (it lead to bleeding and a scab). Do you recommend I redo the fraxel on this area a month later or should I wait longer? Thank you for your time.

We’re are all human right? I think we’ve probably all picked something on our faces at some point!  Now you’re worried that it made things worse.

Here’s what to do:

  • First take a deep breath and realize it’s probably not as bad as you think.
  • Let is heal!! Leave the crust/scab alone and do NOT pick at it, remove it, or in any way disturb it again.
  • Keep it moist with moisturizer or a little vaseline, until the scab falls off on it’s own or put a bandaid or medical paper tape on it to keep it moist.
  • Once the crust is off, you can use a little silicone scar gel and rub it in 2-3 times a day.
  • Give the area 1-2 months before deciding on a re Fraxel with your doctor. You may not need to redo it.
  • If you are a frequent picker, you may have a mild version of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) or an anxiety issue. If you do, consider getting help for this.

Hope this helps,  Dr. I

SkinTour Skincare
One of the best investments in your skin is your daily skincare. Why? Because you can prevent many problems with blotchy skin color, lack of glow, texture, some types of acne, and fine lines with good skincare products. You can also correct some of these problems with effective skincare products. Great skincare is often more expensive because quality ingredients are expensive. Some companies spend on research/development which benefits all of us and adds to the cost. Are they worth it? In general - yes! I have handpicked some of what I consider to be the best skin care products, and offer them for sale on SkinTour's shop. This is based on my team and I's testing and research at our clinic. Many of the products are in my own regimen. What could be better than using skin care products a dermatologist uses?!
